Ex-MORBID ANGEL Frontman DAVID VINCENT Reveals ‘Illud Divinum Insanus’ as His Most Challenging Album Ever
Artist Spotlight: David Vincent
Bio:
David Vincent, renowned as the former frontman of the legendary death metal band Morbid Angel, has made an indelible mark on the music scene with his distinctive vocal style and artistic vision. Initially joining Morbid Angel in the late 1980s, Vincent contributed to the band’s rise to prominence within the extreme metal genre. His work on classic albums like Altars of Madness and Covenant solidified his place in metal history. After briefly parting ways with Morbid Angel in 1996, Vincent embarked on a journey of self-discovery, leading him to return to the band in the early 2000s. His creative path includes not only performances but also collaborations, such as his project I AM MORBID, where he revisits classic Morbid Angel tracks with former bandmates and other musicians.
In a recent interview with Altars Of Metal, Vincent reflected on some of the challenges he faced during his career, particularly regarding the creation of Morbid Angel’s controversial album Illud Divinum Insanus, released in 2011. This record marked his return to the band after a long absence, but the process was fraught with difficulties, primarily due to lineup changes and personal struggles.
Recent Interview Highlights:
When asked which album was the most challenging to create, Vincent cited Illud Divinum Insanus. He elaborated: “That was a very strange time. That’s when Pete [Sandoval, longtime drummer] had his injury and he was unable to play. We had just worked in a new guitar player and a new drummer. The writing process was really, really strange — not what I was accustomed to.” Despite the difficulties, he remains proud of the performances on the album, emphasizing, "I did the very best that I could with what I had to work with."
Reflecting on his entire career, Vincent also noted a particularly tough period in 1996, when he left Morbid Angel. "I was a very miserable person, and that’s part of the reason why I left. I needed to get some things right with myself. And I did," he admitted. "Even though we were really at an amazing point career-wise, when you’re not happy, you need to address it."
The reception of Illud Divinum Insanus was mixed, as it incorporated industrial and electronic elements, diverging significantly from the band’s traditional sound. Trey Azagthoth, the band’s guitarist, later commented on the creative differences that contributed to the album’s unique direction.
