ANTHRAX’s Joey Belladonna Reveals He Has ‘About Two or Three More’ Songs to Record for Upcoming Album
In a recent interview with The Adventures Of Pipeman, legendary ANTHRAX vocalist Joey Belladonna shared exciting updates about the band’s forthcoming album, the long-awaited successor to their acclaimed 2016 release, "For All Kings". Belladonna enthused about the current status of the recording sessions, stating: "We have nine or ten songs — I lost count — but I’ve got maybe two or three more to go, and then we’ll be done with the record. I’m still working on it. I haven’t finished it yet."
The discussion highlighted the remarkable longevity of ANTHRAX, with the band still delivering high-energy live performances and top-notch new music after more than four decades. Belladonna expressed pride in the band’s progression, saying, "One thing I can say is it’s always good quality, it’s well thought out, and we always bring it. I would say that we’re way better than we’ve ever been." He added that recent shows in the U.K. and Europe had been phenomenal, remarking, "We just got off a four-week run… It was great. It’s always tight."
At the recent NAMM convention in Anaheim, California, bassist Frank Bello discussed the anticipated release timeline for the new album, sharing that it is expected to drop in September or October. Last November, Bello returned to Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 to lay down bass tracks for the upcoming project, collaborating once more with producer Jay Ruston, who previously helmed ANTHRAX’s last two albums.
The creative process has been meticulous and deliberate, as guitarist Scott Ian shared in a previous interview with Guitar World that the band is taking their time to ensure the album meets their high standards: "We’re not in a place in our lives anymore where we could just drop everything and finish writing and then get in there and record it all… We have families and commitments now." Ian hinted at the album’s musical direction, teasing that it will include "crushing riffs and great, hooky choruses" designed to resonate with fans during live performances.
Charlie Benante, the band’s drummer, mentioned an “epic” song reminiscent of previous ANTHRAX classics, alongside tracks that represent a new musical direction. He noted, “There’s a song which has the same kind of epic feel as ‘In The End’ and ‘Blood Eagle Wings’.” Bello echoed this sentiment, stating the new material is heavier and more complex than before, with the intention of pushing boundaries.
