POISON’s Rikki Rockett Reflects on 40 Years as Rock Underdogs: A Badge of Honor
POISON’s Rikki Rockett on Staying True to Rock & Future Plans
In a recent interview on the Boise, Idaho radio station 96.9 The Eagle, POISON drummer Rikki Rockett discussed the significance of maintaining the band’s authentic identity and remaining detached from fleeting musical trends, particularly as rock grapples for relevance in a hip-hop-dominated landscape. As the band gears up for a monumental 40th-anniversary tour in 2026, celebrating their groundbreaking debut album Look What The Cat Dragged In (released in 1986), Rockett shared his thoughts on the band’s enduring underdog status.
“Over the years, I’ve often said that if I had my way, this would be the ‘POISON 40th Anniversary Tour’ — or better yet, ‘Poison Versus The World 40th Anniversary.’ For 40 years, we’ve proudly carried the underdog badge,” Rockett remarked, noting that fans love to root for those who don’t conform to industry standards. This has kept the band’s music “fresh,” as they’ve resisted the urge to chase after trending sounds. Referencing modern pop artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan, he quipped, “What are we gonna do? Start sounding like them? [Laughs]”
Throughout the interview, Rockett emphasized the importance of evolving as artists while avoiding drastic changes that might alienate their fanbase. “Evolving is one thing, but suddenly forcing ourselves into a mold that isn’t us? That doesn’t work. Our contemporaries who tried to change everything when grunge hit didn’t succeed, and fans saw right through it,” he said.
As plans are set in motion for the 2026 tour, Rockett expressed enthusiasm about touring with the band, stating, "I could tour nine months out of the year every year. Touring is something I love. It feels like a family reunion each time, reconnecting with fans and even the venue staff we’ve grown to know over the years.”
