Genesis are uniquely blessed with two deep-smoked tenors in Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Their streamlined, melodic ‘80s sound derives equally from soul and their years creating twisty prog rock in the early ‘70s, underpinned by pugnacious drums (“Mama”) and pounding synths (“Abacab”). Saving their skronk chops for making angry musical points (“Land of Confusion”), their most emotional songs are tender and mature, taking them from the languid guitar spangles of “Follow You Follow Me” to the beefier “Invisible Touch,” led by Collins’ longing sincerity.
