Sabaton’s Joakim Brodén Celebrates Band’s Success in U.S. Market
Joakim Brodén of SABATON Discusses Breaking Into the U.S. Market
In a recent interview on The Mistress Carrie Podcast, Joakim Brodén, the lead singer of Swedish power metal band SABATON, opened up about the band’s efforts to crack the American market. At 45, Brodén expressed his excitement about their growing presence, stating, “I’m happy about it mostly, actually.” However, he noted that while the largest venues they’ll play in North America hold about 5,000 fans, in Europe they regularly perform in front of audiences of 25,000. This progression, while encouraging, keeps the band motivated to work harder.
Understanding the Challenge
Brodén acknowledges that breaking into the American metal scene has been a slow process for SABATON. The band didn’t tour the U.S. until 2011 and subsequently faced challenges with audience exposure. He remarked, “There’s a different vibe with festivals. It’s easier for European fans to discover new metal bands because almost every country has medium-sized rock festivals.” The U.S. festival landscape tends to be more genre-specific, posing barriers for bands like SABATON.
Discussing the industry’s dynamics, Brodén said, “The business itself feels like it’s saying, ‘No, that’s not going to work in America.’ But as soon as fans discover us, they often ask, ‘Why haven’t I heard of these guys before?’” This highlights a significant hurdle: the disconnect between industry perceptions and genuine audience interest.
A Nordic Legacy
Reflecting on the Nordic propensity for heavy metal, Brodén mused about the culture and climate. He explained, “The amount of heavy metal bands per capita in Scandinavia is pretty damn high.” He elaborated on how long, dark winters encourage creative pursuits, like learning musical instruments, fostering a rich musical tradition in the region.
Insights from SABATON’s Journey
SABATON’s bassist and manager, Pär Sundström, echoed Brodén’s sentiments during a conversation with Meltdown from Detroit’s WRIF radio station. Sundström highlighted the uphill battle the band faced in gaining traction in the U.S. music scene, saying, “We had to believe in ourselves and do lots of support tours,” which echo their strategy in Europe. He emphasized the band’s on-stage performances as the core of their success, reflecting their dedication to live music.
Sundström noted that success has begun to blossom, especially after tours with iconic bands like Judas Priest. This dedication and perseverance paid off, illustrating how localized efforts have slowly but steadily increased their fanbase.
Upcoming Events
SABATON is set to embark on their North American tour, originally scheduled for February 2023, which was postponed to ensure Sundström’s full recovery. The tour includes major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston, concluding in Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 20, 2023. They’ll be joined by supporting acts Pop Evil and Wings of Steel.
In Europe, the band has kicked off “The Legendary Tour” in November 2025, celebrating their new album, “Legends,” which was released on October 17, 2025. This tour promises a spectacular celebration featuring the Legendary Orchestra and surprises that highlight SABATON’s deep connection with their fans.
Album Details
“Legends” delves into historical narratives and iconic figures such as Jeanne d’Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Miyamoto Musashi, further showcasing SABATON’s unique ability to blend rock with historical storytelling. The album is available in multiple formats, including an array of collectible vinyl editions, ensuring it appeals to both new listeners and longtime fans.
Each edition of the album ties back to the band’s strong thematic focus on history, making it not only a rich musical experience but also an educational one.
