There’s a Possibility AEROSMITH Might Take Action in the Future, But It’s Uncertain

AEROSMITH’s Tom Hamilton Reflects on Band’s Future and New Musical Endeavors

Aerosmith’s iconic bassist, Tom Hamilton, recently opened up about the band’s uncertain future in light of Steven Tyler’s vocal injury, which has led to their official retirement from touring. This announcement came on August 2, 2024, almost a year after Tyler, now 76, suffered a fractured larynx during a performance in September 2023. In a candid interview with WBUR, Hamilton discussed the healing process and the band’s potential for future performances.

"Steven’s healing process is going really, really well, but it goes at its own pace," Hamilton stated when asked about the prospect of Aerosmith returning to the concert stage. "Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big ‘if’… the last thing I want to be doing is to try and push Steven in that direction. If we do anything in the future, it would come from him." This echoes his sentiments expressed to AARP last August, where he rated hope for future Aerosmith activities between 7 and 9 on a scale of 1 to 10, stating, "We won’t be doing any tours from now on, but I’ll always have hope that other types of opportunities will come along."

In discussing Aerosmith’s time in Las Vegas, Hamilton shared, "I loved our time in Sin City, but I have doubts that there are any more in the future." He also indicated that the band has not initiated talks for a new album, stating, "So far, there hasn’t been any talk" about returning to the studio, which begs the question of what lies ahead for the legendary band after their last album release in 2012.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Aerosmith, Hamilton remains optimistic about maintaining the spirit of the band. "Steven has a way of powering through challenges like this one… you never know. We won’t be touring, but there are a lot of other ways to be and do Aerosmith," he stated.

Aerosmith’s Decision to Retire from Touring

In a previous statement regarding the decision to retire, the band reflected: "As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury." The band acknowledged the challenges Tyler faced during his recovery, expressing a collective sentiment of gratitude towards fans: "Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades."

Their last performance took place on September 9, 2023, in Elmont, New York, just three dates into what was supposed to be their "Peace Out" tour. The tour was set to continue through February 2024, featuring special guests The Black Crowes. Tyler had expressed hopes for a comeback, but the injury ultimately confirmed the band’s retirement from touring.
